A Century of History
River Hills Café & Bistro, formerly known as John’s Cracker Barrel, has been a cornerstone of the Shark River Hills community in Neptune Township, New Jersey, for nearly a century. With deep roots and a rich history, this cherished establishment has evolved alongside the community it serves.
1925: The Beginning
The story begins in 1925 when Henry and Mary Dolan established a general store at the foot of Tucker’s Bridge. Known then as United Grocer Store, the store was much more than a grocery shop—it was a gathering place for the community. Locals could buy groceries, auto parts, and gasoline, enjoy ice cream on the porch, rent boats, or catch the bus service around the Hills. The store quickly became a vital part of daily life in Shark River Hills.
1952: The Cracker Barrel Era
In 1952, the store was renamed Cracker Barrel under the ownership of Mr. and Mrs. Blauvelt. This marked its transformation into a community-centric establishment, further embedding itself into the fabric of Shark River Hills life. The Blauvelts’ focus on community created a space where residents could connect and share moments.
1979: The Thomas' Cracker Barrel Era
In 1979, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Thomas purchased The Cracker Barrel, and rebranded it as Thomas’ Cracker Barrel. With a vision to maintain its charm while adding their personal touch, the couple focused on preserving the restaurant’s reputation for hearty meals and a welcoming atmosphere. Under their ownership, Thomas’ Cracker Barrel became a beloved spot for both locals and travelers, known for its home-style cooking and friendly service.
2001: John's Cracker Barrel
A new era began in 2001 when John and Evangelia Scheidt took ownership and renamed it John's Cracker Barrel. Evangelia managed the deli for nearly two decades, leaving her personal touch on the business known for her warm service and high-quality food, making the deli a staple in Shark River Hills. After 19 years of dedication, she leased the business for six years, but her connection to the deli remained strong.
2025: Returning to Family Hands
As the business celebrates its 100th year, it has returned to family hands with Evangelia and her daughter Joan at the helm. Together, they are continuing the legacy with a brand new name River Hills Café & Bistro, blending tradition with modern touches while maintaining the warmth and community spirit that has defined the establishment for generations.
A Place of Memories
River Hills Café & Bistro is more than a restaurant; it’s a piece of local history. For decades, it has been a hub for first jobs, family gatherings, and moments of community life. Whether enjoying a meal, sharing stories, or celebrating milestones, locals have always found a sense of belonging here. Today, Evangelia and Joan lead the café into its next chapter, ensuring it remains a cherished part of Neptune Township for generations to come.
